Fukuoka Mutual Bank Oita Branch
Planned to be built in the center of Oita City, the tower-shaped exterior was intended to serve a dual role in the city as a landmark (for the citizens) and an advertisement (for the company). The most notable feature of the tower is its interior space, which is covered with vivid colors such as salmon pink. The attempt to change the quality of space through color had already been seen at the Oita Prefectural Library, and was a theme that had been deepened through exhibitions such as “Color and Space” (1966, Minami Gallery) and “From Space to Environment” (1966, Ginza Matsuya). Behind this was the recognition that space does not exist independently outside of the human body, but is something that arises from our physical perception on a case-by-case basis.
